Construction Craft Laborers

What do construction craft laborers do?

Laborers provide and maintain construction site projects, including flagging, material handling, pipe laying, pipe operation, shoring and trench excavation, concrete placement, concrete

  vibration, concrete cutting and coring, concrete curing, form stripping, asphalt placement, grade checking, guard rail installation, demolition of buildings, operation of cutting torches and many other work classifications.

Program Specifics

There is one program that takes from two to three years. Apprentices begin by earning approximately $13/hour and journey level workers earn almost $21/hour. Additional benefits like medical, dental and vision insurance and a retirement pension increase the total wage value. Applications are accepted year ‘round at the Construction Craft Laborers office at 570 Reactor Way in Reno. The program hopes to accept 20 or more new apprentices each year.

▲ All applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

▲ Applicants do not need a high school diploma or its equivalent, but this is preferred. 

▲ Applicants must be physically capable of performing the essential functions of the apprenticeship program and subsequent work.

▲ Employers may ask apprentices to successfully pass a drug test.

▲ The apprenticeship program offers equal opportunity to all people regardless of race, age, color, gender, religion, nationality or sexual orientation.

▲ The interview committee is comprised of members from labor.

▲ If accepted, an applicant remains on the list for two years.

▲ Work begins as soon as an apprentice is indentured.

▲ Classroom instruction is offered year ‘round, with classes being held in the evenings, on Saturdays or during the day. 

▲ There is no cost for school, books or tools.

▲ Apprentices must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

▲ Once an applicant is indentured as an apprentice, they are expected to become a member of the Construction Craft Laborers Union, the fees of which are: 

        ↘ An initiation fee is $200 (paid in full or set up as a payroll deduction.) 

        ↘ Starting apprenticeship monthly dues are $32. Additionally,
           supplemental dues of 70 cents/hour worked is assessed for every
           apprentice or journey level worker.
