Apprenticeship for Sheet Metal Workers

Sheet Metal WorkersWhat do sheet metal workers do?

Sheet metal workers fabricate sheet metal so that it can be used in a variety of applications. All facets of sheet metal work are covered by this trade including, but not limited to, heating and air conditioning, ventilating, skylights, cornice work, lockers, spiral or oval duct, kitchen equipment and testing, metal roofing and balancing systems. Sheet metal workers are respected for their quality of workmanship and their safety awareness.

 

Program Specifics

  • There is one program, which takes four years.  Apprentices begin by earning approximately $13/hour and journey level workers begin at about $30/hour.  Additional benefits like medical, dental and vision insurance, local and international pensions and a 401k increase the total wage value. Applications are taken year ‘round at the Sheet Metal Workers Training Facility, 1237 Gator Way, off Glendale Ave via International Place.
  • All applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Applicants must possess a high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Applicants must be physically capable of performing the essential functions of the apprenticeship program and subsequent work.
  • The interview committee is comprised of members from labor and contractor management
  • Applicants who are accepted remain on the list for two years.
  • Applicants must successfully pass a drug test once they are accepted into and enter the program.
  • The apprenticeship program offers equal opportunity to all people regardless of race, age, color, gender, religion, nationality or sexual orientation. 
  • Apprentices are required to attend five, one week long (40 hours) training sessions per year and 12 nights welding school per year, for a total of 240 hours of training a year.  All training sessions are held at the training facility on Gator Way in Sparks.  
  • There is no cost for school or books.  Tools cost approximately $200.
  • Once an applicant is indentured as an apprentice, they are expected to become a member of the Sheet Metal Workers International Association, a union, the fees of which are: 
    • An initiation fee runs $500 (paid in full or set up on as a payroll deduction).
    • Current starting apprenticeship monthly dues are approximately $58.
